One of the creators of Dying Light spoke about an abandoned project in the genre of royal battle

It often happens that some games do not live to the release and they have to be closed at the production stage. Such misses happen even with the largest players in our industry. Three projects can be cited as an example, which Ubisoft, as well as Agent, has thrown into the garbage basket, a long -term but still not implemented Rockstar Games project.

Polish studios are no exception. Many of you remember, for example, Bad Blood – an independent addition to the first Dying Light, focused on network gameplay in the style of royal battles. Techland wanted to catch a hype created by Pubg and Fortnite. However, success did not come – enough to say that DLC never went beyond the Early Access of Steam, where it debuted in September 2018.

Timon Smectala, producer Dying Light and leading game designer of the second part, shared his opinion about the reasons for the failure of this project.

Yes, several unsuccessful decisions were made there. It would be great if only "Bad blood" Now I was a promoted brand and was successful, but we certainly learned a lot on this project. Actually, only because we decided to do Dying Light 2, we postponed Bad Blood aside. Because, I think, if we continued to study this project, we could get into very interesting places. Bad Blood was really built on the wake of royal battles, but it was designed to use our network technology, which did not assume an automatic connection of 100 players on one map, as in Fornite or Pubg. We had some restrictions – we tested gameplay for twelve, maximum sixteen people. But thereby we laid the foundations of the popular genre, which are now shooters with prey. Of course, it would be great if Bad Blood had become our Fortnite – this is a tempting vision of alternative reality, but this did not happen. It is possible that the knowledge received from this IP will not be used at some stage of development of Dying Light 2.

And although it is unlikely that Dying Light: Bad Blood will succeed, even close to PUBG and FORTNITE, who knows how the fate of this addition would have happened if Techland decided to work longer on it. Be that as it may, in return we received Dying Light 2, which is at least a good project, so ultimately, like gamers, we can be satisfied.
